PCS Survival Tips
PCS orders to Wright-Patt? Let’s be real — this isn’t your first rodeo. You already know there’s paperwork, boxes, and stress involved. But what about the things nobody tells you? In this video, I’m sharing the survival hacks that will save your sanity during your Dayton PCS — the tips that don’t always make it onto the official checklist.
Most movers think PCS stress is unavoidable. But the truth is, with a few smart strategies — from how you pack to how you plan your first week — you can take control of the process. Let’s dig in.
Tip #1 – Pack a “PCS Survival Kit
Think beyond the first-week box. Create a true ‘PCS survival kit’ with things like: extension cords, lightbulbs, basic tools, paper plates, and even shower curtains.
Why? Because the little things you don’t think about are always the ones that trip you up. Having these basics ready saves you from three trips to Target on your first night.
Tip #2 – Double Up on Documents

Yes, you’ll bring your PCS binder, but here’s the hack: make two binders. One for you, one for your spouse or partner.
That way, if you split up to run errands — finance office, school registration, utilities — you’re not waiting on each other to swap paperwork. It sounds simple, but it can cut your setup time in half.
Tip #3 – Schedule House Hunting Around Gate Traffic
Here’s a Wright-Patt specific hack: don’t schedule home tours during shift change. Gate traffic around the base can back up quickly.
If you’re only in town for a short house-hunting trip, losing 45 minutes in traffic is a big deal. Plan your tours for mid-morning or early afternoon so you maximize your time on the ground.
Tip #4 – Ask for Video Walkthroughs Before You Fly Out
Don’t waste your house-hunting trip on properties that won’t work. Have your agent send video walk-throughs of potential homes first.
That way, when you do fly in, every property you tour is a contender. I’ve had clients cut their in-person list from 15 homes down to 5 strong options — saving time and stress.
Tip #5 – Build in Buffer Days
One of the biggest survival tips? Don’t plan your schedule to the hour. Build in buffer days.
Appraisals can take longer, movers can get delayed, or temporary lodging can extend by a week. If you plan with zero wiggle room, every hiccup feels like a disaster. A little breathing room keeps your PCS manageable.

Tip #6 – Use Local Networks Before You Arrive
Connect with Dayton groups on Facebook or through Wright-Patt’s newcomer resources before you ever set foot here.
Want to know which gyms are close to base? Which grocery stores are cheapest? Or where to find reliable childcare? Locals will give you answers in minutes that could take you weeks to figure out on your own.
Tip #7 – Prioritize Comfort in Temporary Lodging
Temporary lodging is part of most PCS moves. Here’s the tip: make it livable. Bring comfort items like good pillows, a coffee setup, or even streaming devices.
When you’re already under stress, those small comforts keep you sane while you wait for housing.
Tip #8 – Don’t Forget Quality of Life
It’s easy to get tunnel vision on housing and checklists. But survival also means enjoying your new city.
Dayton has great parks, trails, and the Air Force Museum — all free. Taking a day to explore helps you feel settled faster, instead of living in PCS limbo for months
The truth is, PCS moves will never be completely stress-free. But with survival hacks like buffer days, duplicate binders, and smarter house hunting, you’ll feel prepared instead of reactive. That shift makes all the difference.
